PAM'S STORY

“I think this is a good way to get control of personal health, and would recommend it to others.  I now know how to tackle my diabetes risk and I am confident I will now not become diabetic.”

Pam, 79, had some other health issues when she discovered she was at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.  She joined the programme and here describes her experience of it:

How did you find the course?

It was very detailed, appropriate and interesting.

How did you find the course?

I found the course informative and very well-presented by the facilitator, Naz, who was very willing to repeat any part that we misunderstood or forgot.

What are your experiences of being on the course?

My experience of being on the course was positive. It was enjoyable and the time was well allocated to the different topics. I enjoyed learning in a group setting. Naz was a good group leader and promoted much good-humoured discussion.

What have you learnt?

I have learnt about the chemistry of food, and how much of what we eat turns into glucose. I now know how to change my diet to take in less sugar.

How was your experience each week on the course?

The sessions were well planned to cover different topics each week and also to repeat the main messages  - for example, exercising, eating smaller portion and eat different quantities of carbohydrates and fat and more protein and vegetables..

How are you making the new learning fit into your lifestyle?

I am spending more time planning meals and making sure I have some moderate-intensity activity every day.  This is not too difficult to do once new habits form.

What difference has it made to your life?

I now know how to tackle my diabetes risk and I am confident I will now not become diabetic.

Would you recommend it to others?

I think this is a good way to get control of personal health, and would recommend it to others.

What's working for you at this moment?

I have changed some of my eating habits. I now have brown staples instead of white, and have increased my intake of protein instead of fat and sugar. I have changed many recipes to use different ingredients.  I am more conscious of my waistline and am working on reducing it.
